We have several ways of communicating with each other, from day-day minutia to Annual meetings.
If I'm on campus and not searching for coffee, you can find me hanging out in my office most of the time. My office is always open for a chat. To do this, knock/stick your head in the door and ask me if I've got a time to chat. My response will be one of the following:
Sure! C'mon in!
Yeah, two seconds just let me finish this thought/sentence
I only have a few minutes, will this work?
Your issue is important to me - can we book a chunk of time to dedicate to this?
If my door is closed, assume I'm on a call, or don't want to be disturbed - so ping me an email or message on Slack.
My communication style:
My brain is a mess and generally doesn't stop. If I'm working outside of regular hours, I usually try to save communication as a draft to send during the day, though this doesn't always work out. Please don't feel obligated to respond until you are back at work. I generally don't expect responses to these emails, until you are back online, it's just a case of tending to tasks on my end.
The exceptions here are grant/conference deadlines where we may be working under the pump to get something finished. I assure you that 1.) we will have a conversation on the expectations beforehand so we can plan for this and 2.) I will be working right alongside you (figuratively, otherwise that would be weird) to support you and make sure we can get things done.
